Theme for the Cross, tells a narrative of a Tunisian man, Mohsen Lihidheb (Momo), who wanders the coast of Zarzis in the southeast of Tunisia, collecting the lost objects of migrants, or harragas. What initially began as a voluntary beach cleanup quickly took a sociopolitical turn as Momo came to find hundreds of thousands of migrants’ shoes, clothes, and letters stashed in bottles, which he uses to locate their identity and write poems in tribute to their memory.
This image is part of a larger photographic project by Rachidi titled Lost in Transition, which the artist describes as “an ode to the sea and all those who have thrown a letter in it.” The project explores Momo’s practice of responding to tragedy with imagination and poetry.
