As part of Overseeding, Plant Provocations parallels patricia kaersenhout’s exhibition Of Palimpsests & Erasure by exploring stories about people and plants from a decolonizing and decentering perspective. The workshop will dive into the context and history around plants humans engage with today, including tropical houseplants, economic botany, and plant with significant medicinal, culinary, or cultural value. Participants are invited to bring a plant (live houseplant, photo, drawing, seed) and share their story in relation to the plant. An art-making activity accompanies the storytelling as a way to open the door to deeper discussions about plant/human interactions.
This program will feature a selection of plants borrowed from the UTM Teaching Greenhouse. Registered participants will have the opportunity to join an optional tour of the greenhouse at the end of the workshop. Led by Tim Moffat, Horticultural Assistant, the 30-minute tour will accommodate a maximum of 10 people per session. Two identical tours will be offered at 3:30pm and 4:00pm, with participation on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The workshop venue is accessible to individuals who require barrier-free access. Some movement throughout the campus is required—ramps and curb cuts are in place. The workshop will take place in room 108, on the ground floor of the the Kaneff Centre/Innovation Complex, which includes open spaces, round sloped corners, and windows to facilitate visual communication and navigation. Accessible multi-user gendered washrooms are located at ground level.
We regret that the UTM Teaching Greenhouse is not wheelchair accessible.
