Contemporary art made by those who are incarcerated creates tangible actions of resistance rooted in the moment that challenge the common assumption that a world without prisons is impossible. Sheena Hoszko, whose work is currently on display in Take Care at La Ferme du Buisson, an exhibition curated by Christine Shaw, invites us to discuss the notion of “art and prison.”
Sheena Hoszko is a sculptor, anti-prison activist, and settler living and working in Tio’tia:ke (Montréal), in Kanien’kehá:ka territory. Her art practice examines the power dynamics of geographic, architectural, and psychological sites, and is informed by her family’s experiences with incarceration, the military, and mental illness.
Sheena Hoszko (Canada) is a recipient of the Visual Arts Committees of the Cité internationale des arts.
