“Trophy” (a prize of war) comes from the Latin trophæum (a sign of victory), originally tropæum, which is a transliteration of the Greek tropaion (monument of an enemy’s defeat) from neut. of adj. tropaios (of defeat) from trope (a rout), originally “a turning” (of the enemy). In common usage, “trope” describes a word, phrase, or image used in a figurative way in order to create an artistic effect. In this case, Trope is the shape of the wound dressing put over the face of a poached rhinoceros—an animal bracketed by competing intentions towards nature. Trope suggests a defaced species, a new face, or a permanent imprint that is the result of both harm and care, poaching and conservation.
