The artists' works in this exhibition engage with popular music, from jazz to rock, from metal to pop. Some works mime and enact it, others document and record it including the role of the star and the fan, the performer and collector, the instrumentalist or the vocalist. All are interested in the culture of music, the way in which it makes or breaks individual identities, social relationships and collective sensibilities.
Re-play was the contemporary section of a large, multi-venue, traveling exhibition titled "soundtracks," produced by The Edmonton Art Gallery in partnership with the Blackwood Gallery (UTM), the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection with the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, Museums Assistance Program.
The Toronto presentation of Re-play was hosted by the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Power Plant, Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Centre, and the Doris McCarthy Gallery (UTSC). It received the financial support of the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council.
