Mowry Baden has long been interested in perception and in art as a form of experience rather than object. One of Canada's most distinguished senior artists, his sculptural installations are at once pedagogical and experimental, often inviting comparison with technical and laboratory equipment. They are designed to undo the mappings of memory by way of unexpected physical sensations. Freckled Gyres, a viewer-activated installation, developed these interests in ways that are particularly relevant to contemporary concerns with cinema and its mesmeric effects.
