The term protocol is used to delineate appropriate conduct with respect to context or social setting. Protocol refers to social and cultural norms built through mutual engagement, rather than law, and is thus often a more appropriate signpost for developing inter-cultural dialogues (see Indigenizing Institutions, Running with Concepts: The Empathic Edition). Art galleries are also subject to many inherited and unspoken protocols: such as quiet, distanced observation, prioritizing visual experience, or upholding professional orthodoxy.
